What to Expect from the Process of Surrogacy in Pennsylvania
The first thing you should know about surrogacy is that no two journeys are alike. Your surrogacy process in Pennsylvania will be determined by your goals and preferences, as well as those of your gestational carrier. The only way to find out exactly what your journey may entail is by speaking with a surrogacy professional.
That said, there are some common steps involved in every Pennsylvania surrogacy. We’ve laid out the surrogacy process, step-by-step, for you below:
Step 1: Find a professional and learn about how surrogacy works.
If you want to have a baby through surrogacy, you first need to understand what is involved. Talking to a professional is the best way to do that.
When you contact Central PA Surrogacy, we will explain exactly how surrogacy works with our full-service program, including the services that we offer. We will help you determine whether you meet necessary surrogacy requirements to work with us. If you haven’t already, we’d recommend you speak with your reproductive endocrinologist. They can evaluate whether gestational surrogacy is a viable fertility option for your family.
Step 2: Find a gestational carrier.
Once you have chosen a professional, you’ll need to find a gestational carrier. If you work with Central PA Surrogacy, this step in the surrogacy process will be taken care of for you. Our team will evaluate your goals and preferences and match you with a gestational carrier who shares the same ideals. You will get a chance to review her information prior to an initial call (scheduled after she completes a psychological evaluation).
If you both show interest in each other after that call, our team will schedule an in-person meeting, too. Should you both feel comfortable moving forward, our team will guide you through the next steps in the Pennsylvania surrogacy process.
Step 3: Draft legal contracts.
Your surrogate will undergo a medical screening at your fertility clinic to confirm her eligibility. If she is approved by your doctor, you will start the legal contract stage. You will both be represented by separate attorneys, but don’t worry — by working with us, you will have immediate access to experienced lawyers from local firm Bierly & Rabuck.
Your surrogacy contract will cover details such as:
- Rights and responsibilities
- Surrogate compensation
- Contact expectations
- Parental rights
- Agreements on selective reduction and termination
- And more
Once your contract is finalized, your carrier will start the medical process of surrogacy.
Step 4: Complete the medical process.
The medical surrogacy process, step-by-step, will be coordinated by your fertility clinic. It usually involves preparing a surrogate’s body with a fertility medication protocol before eventually completing the embryo transfer process. Your reproductive endocrinologist can provide the best timeline estimate for this step.
Once your carrier is successfully pregnant, you can be involved in her pregnancy however you wish. You can attend important medical appointments, and you will be in contact with her throughout these nine months. You will plan her labor and delivery experience together.
At the same time, our team will work with your lawyer to complete any necessary legal steps for establishing parental rights. This includes obtaining a pre-birth order, which will ensure your names are placed on your baby’s original birth certificate. This order also allows you to make medical decisions for your baby and take custody of him or her after birth.
Step 5: Meet your baby and become parents!
After your surrogate’s pregnancy, it will finally be time to welcome your baby into the world. This is the most exciting step in the PA surrogacy process for many intended parents; they can often be present at their child’s birth, and our team may be there to support you, as well. After your baby’s discharge, you will be able to return home as the family you’ve always dreamed of being.
